Monarto 2010

5 10 2010

October long weekend – beautiful weather and time for us to finally visit Monarto – we’d been saying that we wanted to visit for several years and now we have!

Here are some facts for you:

*Rhinos can run 40-45 km/hr.
*Chimpanzees live in areas where coltan for mobile phones is mined.
*Meerkats may live in groups of 20-30.
*There is one male in a chital deer herd who keeps the ladies safe and his coat gets darker brown with age.
*Mesopotamian Fallow deer like to sit in the shade and are camera-shy.
*Giraffes have high blood pressure and don’t deal with anethesia well. They have 7 neck vertebrae and eat up to 60kg of food a day.
*Eland horns get curly the older they are.
*American Bison populations were reduced by whites as a control mechanism over nomadic Native Americans.

Moon Lantern Festival & Quiz Night

1 10 2010

Judging by the difficulty in finding a park, this year’s moon lantern festival was a hit. There were even some vegan asian dishes on sale.

We checked out the lanterns and watched some drumming and fireworks. A couple of days later we ate red-bean moon cakes from Zenhouse.

Our recent quiz night was also a success. We filled the hall with tables and gave away heaps of prizes. M&M bid on these paintings of sakura on our behalf and did a fantastic job in winning the auction for us (since we were the auctioneers we couldn’t bid for ourselves). Let’s hope this year’s Vegan Festival is also a huge success.

Holidays have been lovely so far, with great weather and lots of garden visitors to keep me company while I weed all of our gardens beds that have overgrown in our time away. Say “hello” to Mr stick insect.
