Week 3 Preparing the site for footings

Even though we had planned the build with minimal site disturbance and changing of levels in mind (the house was designed to match the contour of the block, with 2 levels separated by a couple of steps in order to meet the upward slope as you progress down the block) there still seems to be much work in preparing the site and getting the right levels. Kangarilla Earthworks invited mum and dad on site and let them know that they removed some soil and brought in dolomite.

They even have a site office sign now. Cute.

Week 2 machinery on site

Baby bobcat from Kangarilla Earthmovers visited the site this week to level some of the block.

Week 2 Securing the site

14 01 2015

Security fencing has gone up on the front of the block, and some plumb lines set to check the block levels. Machinery should be on site later in the week to cut the block and get the base preparation done ready for footings next week! It’s almost slab time!

Week 1 Checking the site

The house demolition finished late November/early December 2014, with some oversized footings discovered and requiring the extra cost of a rock breaker brought on site.

We selected our builder around the same time and they got started before Christmas planning the site works for a 2015 January start.

After demolition, the builder took some levels of the block and not surprisingly found the site levels slightly lower than the levels shown on the survey plan (the survey done pre-demolition when there was still a house on the block, which the architect used for indicating levels on their plans).

So, it was proposed to lower the height of the slab as shown on the architects plan by around 100mm to minimise the cut and fill process and avoid bringing in extra soil rather than working to the architect’s plans which would require soil to be brought in the maintain the proposed slab height. We’re happy to use the natural fall of the block and minimise the soil disruption.

The builders also mapped out the builder edges with blue spray paint on the ground. It’s fun to see where the house is going to be!
